How to fold an origami humpy caterpillar

Fold a long strip into a slim tube, slit and swing up two feelers, then make eight slanted pleats: each one makes a segment, and together they hump the body.

You need: Half an A4 sheet cut lengthwise (29.7 x 10.5 cm), green on one side, scissors and a black pen. Hard, 23 steps, about 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Cupboard. White side up, long edges left and right, fold the top and bottom edges in to meet at the middle.
  2. Fold in half. Fold the bottom half behind along the middle. The long fold at the bottom is the belly, the left end is the head.
  3. Crease a thin strip. Fold the top edge down 0.6 cm, all layers, and crease it hard.
  4. Open it. Unfold the thin strip again.
  5. Slit the feelers. Cut along that crease from the head end in 3.1 cm, so a thin strip comes free.
  6. Feelers up. Swing the front layers of the strip up on a slanted crease from the end of the slit, and the back layers up behind, leaning the other way.
  7. Round the head. Fold the two corners of the head end behind a little, so the head is round.
  8. Segment 1: over. Fold the whole tail end over to the left on a crease square across the body, 4.3 cm from the head end.
  9. Segment 1: back. Fold it back from the same point on the belly, on a crease 1 cm further along at the back, so the body bends up.
  10. Segment 2: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  11. Segment 2: back. Fold it back from the same point on the belly, on a crease 1 cm further along at the back, so the body bends up.
  12. Segment 3: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  13. Segment 3: back. Fold it back from the same point on the back, on a crease 1 cm further along at the belly, so the body bends down.
  14. Segment 4: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  15. Segment 4: back. Fold it back from the same point on the back, on a crease 1 cm further along at the belly, so the body bends down.
  16. Segment 5: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  17. Segment 5: back. Fold it back from the same point on the back, on a crease 1 cm further along at the belly, so the body bends down.
  18. Segment 6: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  19. Segment 6: back. Fold it back from the same point on the back, on a crease 1 cm further along at the belly, so the body bends down.
  20. Segment 7: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  21. Segment 7: back. Fold it back from the same point on the belly, on a crease 1 cm further along at the back, so the body bends up.
  22. Segment 8: over. Fold the tail end over again on a square crease 3 cm further along the body.
  23. Segment 8: back. Fold it back from the same point on the belly, on a crease 1 cm further along at the back, so the body bends up.

Inch by inch!

Draw a shiny eye and a smile on the head. Push the tail along and the hump creeps forward.
