How to fold an origami chef

Pleat and round a tall chef's hat with a white band, cut a jacket, trousers and a curly moustache, bend strip arms with cuffs and hold out a pan with a golden pancake.

You need: Pale grey 5.7 × 6.3, 5.1 × 6.45 and 13 × 0.9 cm, grey 4.5 × 6.75 cm, red, brown, black and tan scraps, a 3.9 cm skin square, scissors, glue, pens. Hard, 30 steps, about 45 minutes.

Steps

  1. Jacket: fold in half. Start with the 5.7 × 6.3 cm pale piece, coloured side up. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  2. Jacket: cut the shoulder. Cut a slope off the top corner, from 1.1 cm from the fold down to 1 cm below the top.
  3. Jacket: open it. Open the jacket out flat.
  4. Arms: new sheet. Set the jacket aside. Take the long pale strip, white side up, lying flat.
  5. Arms: bend them. 2 cm from the middle on each side, fold the strip down on a slanted crease: the left arm steeply down, the right one only a little, to hold the pan.
  6. Arms: white cuffs. Fold the last centimetre of each arm straight back over itself for a white cuff.
  7. Neckerchief: new sheet. Set the arms aside. Take the small red square, white side up, turned like a diamond.
  8. Neckerchief: fold it. Fold the top corner down onto the bottom corner: a red triangle.
  9. Head: new sheet. Set the neckerchief aside. Take the 3.9 cm skin-tone square.
  10. Head: round it. Fold the four corners behind, 7 mm along each edge, for a round face.
  11. Moustache: new sheet. Set the head aside. Take a 3 × 0.9 cm dark brown piece.
  12. Moustache: fold in half. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  13. Moustache: cut it. Cut a slant across the top that rises to the open end, then curve the bottom up to meet it in a pointed, turned-up tip.
  14. Moustache: open it. Open it out: a big handlebar moustache.
  15. Hat: new sheet. Set the moustache aside. Take the 5.1 × 6.45 cm pale piece, coloured side up, standing tall.
  16. Hat: fold the band. Fold the bottom edge up 6 mm. The white side makes the hat's band.
  17. Hat: fold in a pleat. 1.3 cm from the middle of the top edge on each side, fold the outer part straight in over the hat.
  18. Hat: fold it back. Fold each flap back out on a line from the same top point, leaning in at the bottom. The band narrows and the top puffs out.
  19. Hat: round the top. Snip the top corners off in a smooth curve so the top of the hat is round and puffy.
  20. Pan: the handle. Set the hat aside. Take a 2.25 × 0.9 cm black strip, white side up.
  21. Pan: fold the handle. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge: a thin black handle.
  22. Pan: new sheet. Set the handle aside. Take a 3 cm black square, black side up.
  23. Pan: round it. Fold the four corners behind, 1.1 cm along each edge, for a round pan.
  24. Pancake: new sheet. Set the pan aside. Take a 2.2 cm tan square.
  25. Pancake: round it. Fold the four corners behind, 8 mm along each edge.
  26. Trousers: new sheet. Set the pancake aside. Take the 4.5 × 6.75 cm grey piece.
  27. Trousers: fold in half. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  28. Trousers: cut the legs. Cut a thin slant 4.2 cm up the fold for the gap between the legs, and trim a thin slice off the open side.
  29. Trousers: open them. Open them out: two straight legs.
  30. Put him together. Glue the jacket over the trousers, the arms behind it and the neckerchief on top. Add head, moustache and hat, then the handle, pan and pancake.

Bon appétit!

Draw happy closed eyes and a smile, two rows of buttons, a check pattern and black shoes on the trousers, and a white pat of butter on the pancake.
