How to fold an origami chipmunk

Tuck the corners of small squares into a round body, a pointy-nosed head and a tiny ear. Add pale paws and a bushy tail, then draw the stripes.

You need: Orange-brown: 7.5 × 9.5 cm, a 6 cm square, a 2 cm square, a 5 × 12 cm strip. Pale tan: 2.5 × 1 cm. Scissors, glue, black and white pens. Medium, 13 steps, about 15 minutes.

Steps

  1. Head: tuck the corners. Start with the head: 6 cm square, brown side up, like a diamond. Fold the top, right and bottom corners behind. The left corner is the snout.
  2. Ear: new sheet. Set the head aside. Take the tiny brown square, brown side up.
  3. Ear: round it. Fold the four corners behind a little, so the ear is round.
  4. Paws: new sheet. Set the ear aside. Take the tiny pale strip, white side up, long side across.
  5. Paws: fold in half. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge.
  6. Paws: round the end. Snip the two corners off the left end. That end is the paws.
  7. Tail: new sheet. Set the paws aside. Take the brown strip, white side up, standing tall.
  8. Tail: fold in half. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  9. Tail: make it bushy. Round both top corners with three snips each. Cut a long slant off the right side of the lower half, so the tail is narrow at the bottom.
  10. Body: new sheet. Set the tail aside. Take the brown rectangle, brown side up, standing tall.
  11. Body: tuck the corners. Fold the two top corners behind, about 2.5 cm, and the two bottom corners a little less, so the body is a pear.
  12. Body: round it off. Fold the eight little corners behind too, so the body is plump and round.
  13. Glue it together. Glue the head on top, the ear behind it, the paws from the chest up to the mouth, and the tail behind the back so it sticks up.

Cheeks full of nuts!

Draw a shiny eye, a nose, a big puffy cheek and a stripe through the eye. Draw dark and pale stripes down the back, and a haunch.
