How to fold an origami christmas angel

Pleat a gold square into rows of feathers, then snip and fold it into two tall wings. Fold a blue kite gown with a white hem, a brown-haired head and a gold halo.

You need: A 15 cm gold square, a 12 cm blue square, a 7 cm brown square, a 5 × 0.7 cm gold strip, scissors, glue and a black and a white pen. Hard, 21 steps, about 35 minutes.

Steps

  1. Gown: fold a kite. Blue square, white side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the upper edges in to meet on the middle line.
  2. Gown: hem. Fold the white bottom point behind on a level crease 7 mm below the side corners, leaving a white trim along the hem.
  3. Gown: shoulders. Fold the top point down on a level crease 4.8 cm below it.
  4. Wings: new sheet. Set the gown aside. Take the big gold square, gold side up.
  5. Wings: feathers 1. Fold the bottom edge up on a level crease 3.4 cm above it.
  6. Wings: fold it back down. Fold it back down on a crease 7 mm higher. A row of feathers sticks out under the ledge.
  7. Wings: feathers 2. Fold the bottom edge up again, 3 cm higher up the wing.
  8. Wings: fold it back down. Fold it back down on a crease 7 mm higher. A row of feathers sticks out under the ledge.
  9. Wings: crease the middle. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  10. Wings: open it. Open it again.
  11. Wings: snip. Cut down the middle crease from the top edge, 4 cm.
  12. Wings: lift the wings. Fold each inner top corner behind on a slant from the end of the snip to the outer top corner. The wings lean out and up.
  13. Wings: shape the tips. Fold the outer bottom corners behind on a long slant, so each wing narrows to its tip. Fold the very tips behind a little.
  14. Halo: new sheet. Set the wings aside. Take the little gold strip, gold side up.
  15. Halo: round the ends. Fold the four corners behind, 5 mm along each edge, so the halo is a smooth band with round ends.
  16. Head: new sheet. Set the halo aside. Take the small brown square, white side up, turned like a diamond.
  17. Head: hair. Fold the top corner down to the middle.
  18. Head: fringe. Fold the new top edge down again, halfway to the middle. A straight brown fringe runs across her forehead.
  19. Head: hair at the sides. Fold the side corners in, 2 cm from each tip, so her hair frames her face.
  20. Head: chin. Fold the bottom corner behind for her chin, and the two top corners behind a little to round her head.
  21. Put her together. Glue the gown on the middle of the wings, then the head on top. Glue the halo just above her head on a bit of folded strip.

Top of the tree!

Draw her sleepy eyes and smile and a few white stars on her gown. Tape a loop on the back to hang her on the tree.
