How to fold an origami gorilla
Two kites folded in half. Crimp the body's head down and reverse-fold its hind leg, then reverse-fold knuckles on the arms and slip the body between them.
You need: 2 squares, black on one side: 15 × 15 cm for the body and 9 × 9 cm for the arms, and a little glue. Hard, 13 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Face and foot. Body first, the 15 cm square, white side up with a corner at the top. Fold the top corner down 2.2 cm and the bottom corner up 1.5 cm.
- Make a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to lie along the middle, making a kite.
- Fold in half. Fold the right half over onto the left. The fold on the right will be the gorilla's chest and tummy; the corner on the left is its hump.
- Head down. Fold the top down through all the layers, on a level crease 2.8 cm below the flat top.
- Head out. Fold it back up on a crease from the same point on the left edge to 1.7 cm lower on the right fold. This crimp bends the head down.
- Hind leg. Outside-reverse-fold the bottom point out to the right, on a crease from the fold 3.5 cm above the flat foot, so it sticks out sideways.
- Lay it down. Turn it so the head is on the right, the hump on top and the leg hanging down. The back slopes down from the hump to the rump.
- Arms: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take the 9 cm square, white side up with a corner at the top.
- Arms: flat ends. Fold the top and bottom corners in 1 cm.
- Arms: kite. Fold the two lower edges in to lie along the middle, making a kite.
- Arms: fold in half. Fold the right half over onto the left. The two layers are the gorilla's two long arms.
- Knuckles. Outside-reverse-fold the bottom 1.3 cm forward to the right, so the fists rest on their knuckles.
- Arms on. Slip the body's chest between the two arms, just below the hump, and glue. The fists and the hind foot stand on the table.
Chest thump!
With a white pen, draw a deep-set eye under the brow, a nostril and a mouth on the head, and a few knuckle lines on the fist.
