How to fold an origami hen
A kite folded in half, with the long point folded up as the neck. Pull out the neck and the head with outside reverse folds, then snip the back and flip up a tall tail.
You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, brown on one side, and scissors. Hard, 9 steps, about 7 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the diagonal. Fold the left corner to the right corner, crease, and unfold.
- Make a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to lie along the centre crease.
- Neck up. Fold the long bottom point up so its tip goes 2 cm past the line between the side corners. This becomes the neck.
- Fold in half. Mountain-fold it in half along the centre crease, so the neck and the brown flaps stay on the outside.
- Lay it down. Turn the model so the long fold is at the bottom and the neck flap's fold is on the right.
- Pull up the neck. Outside-reverse-fold the neck so it stands straight up. Start the crease at the bottom right corner.
- Make the head. Outside-reverse-fold the top 1.5 cm of the neck so it points forward and down. This is the head and beak.
- Snip the tail. Cut along the bottom fold from the back point, about 8 cm, so the two layers of the white back end come apart. They will become the tail.
- Tail up. Fold the front layer of the back up from the end of the cut, so it stands up as a tall tail. Fold the back layer up behind the same way.
Cluck cluck!
Draw an eye on each side of the head, just behind the beak.
