How to fold an origami pelican
An outside reverse fold stands up the white neck and another turns the long grey beak; cuts make short legs, a round body and the baggy pouch.
You need: A 15 cm square, light grey on one side and white on the other; scissors, ruler. Hard, 9 steps, about 30 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Grey square, white side up, turned like a diamond: fold the top corner down to the bottom corner. The long fold at the top is the back.
- Crease the legs. Fold the left end over on an upright crease 6.7 cm from the left corner, and the right end behind on one 7.5 cm from the left corner.
- Open them. Unfold both ends again. The narrow strip between the two creases will be the legs.
- Crease the neck. Fold the right corner over on an upright crease 12.5 cm from it.
- Open it. Unfold it again. The top of the part right of this crease will be the neck, head and beak.
- Cut the neck. Cut up the neck crease, leaving 1.5 cm. Then cut from there to the right slanted edge, 4.8 cm from the corner, and throw the bottom piece away.
- Cut the legs. Cut up both leg creases to 5 cm below the top fold, then across to the edges. Cut the legs level at the bottom. Round off the chest and the belly.
- Lift the neck. Outside-reverse-fold the strip up on a crease from its bottom corner at the chest, so it stands up tall. Its white inside makes the neck.
- Head and beak. Outside-reverse-fold the top 7 cm forward and a little down, on a crease from the front of the neck: a grey head with a long beak.
Open wide!
Draw an eye on the head, a line along the beak above the pouch, a wing with black tips on the body and a webbed foot.
