How to fold an origami rhino

Crease and cut a triangle into a heavy body with thick legs and a head. Swing up two horns from a strip on the nose, crimp the head down and hang a little tail.

You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, grey on one side, small scissors, a ruler and a black pen. Hard, 15 steps, about 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Fold in half. White side up, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner. The long fold at the top is the rhino's back; it faces right.
  2. Crease the legs. Fold the right point over to the front on an upright crease 1.6 cm right of the middle, and the left point behind on one 2.6 cm left of it.
  3. Open them. Unfold both points. The creases mark the back of the front legs and the front of the hind legs.
  4. Crease the chest and rump. Fold the right point to the front again on a crease 3.8 cm right of the middle, and the left point behind on one 4.8 cm left of it.
  5. Open them. Unfold both. Right of the chest crease is the head; left of the rump crease is the tail.
  6. Crease the snout. Fold the right point over on a crease 7.8 cm right of the middle. Past this crease is the strip for the horns.
  7. Open it. Unfold the snout crease.
  8. Cut the legs. Cut the bottom point off level, 5.2 cm below the top fold. Cut up both leg creases to 3.4 cm below the top, then across between them, dipping 4 mm in the middle.
  9. Cut the head. Cut up the chest crease to 3 cm from the top, then under the chin to 1.6 cm deep at the snout crease. Cut the strip past it 1.1 cm deep.
  10. Cut the horns. Snip the strip's top fold. Cut the front layer to a long point, 2.6 cm out from the snout, and the back layer to a short point, 1.5 cm out.
  11. Cut the rump. Cut up the rump crease to 6 mm below the top, then along to the left for a thin tail. Cut the tail 2.4 cm long and taper the hind legs.
  12. Head back. Outside-reverse-fold the head back over the body, on a crease from the top of the chest cut up to the back, 6 mm in front of the cut.
  13. Head down. Reverse-fold the head forward again on a crease from the same top corner, so it hangs low and points forward and down.
  14. Horns up. Fold the front horn up on a crease from the bottom of its root, so it stands up from the nose. Fold the back horn up behind it, leaning back.
  15. Tail down. Fold the little tail down on a slanted crease from the top of the rump, so it hangs behind the hind legs.

Charge!

Draw an eye, a nostril and a mouth on the head, and curved skin folds at the shoulder and hip. Colour the tail tuft and add pale toenails.
