How to fold an origami charging rhino
Fold a deep kite body and swing short stout legs out in a gallop. Crimp the head right down, reverse-fold its tip up into the horn, crimp the tail and pleat the body chunky.
You need: 1 grey square (15 cm or bigger), scissors and a black pen. Hard, 17 steps, about 35 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. White side up, turned like a diamond, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner, crease and unfold.
- Kite. Fold the edges at the left point in on creases from the point to 7.9 cm above and below the middle crease. That end is the rhino's head.
- Narrow the other end. Fold the edges at the right point in on creases from the point to 9 cm above and below the middle crease. That end is the rump.
- Tummy corners. Fold the top and bottom corners in on creases 6 cm above and below the middle crease. They will be hidden inside.
- Fold in half. Fold the top half down onto the bottom half along the middle crease. The long fold on top is the back, the flat bottom is the tummy.
- Crease a strip. Fold the bottom edge up 1.3 cm, all layers together, and crease it hard. This strip gives the legs.
- Open it. Unfold the strip again.
- Slit the legs. Cut along the strip crease from the front end in 3.1 cm, and from the back end in 3.2 cm.
- Front legs: reach. Swing the front strip down on slanted creases from its inner end, the front layers one way and the back ones behind, a little apart.
- Back legs: kick. Swing the back strip down the same way, the front layers forward and the back ones behind.
- Head: crease. Fold the left end over on an upright crease 6.9 cm from its tip, all layers together.
- Head: crimp down. Fold it back on a crease slanting from the same top point, so the head swings right down to charge.
- Horn. Fold the head tip up on a slant from 2.3 cm along its top edge, all layers together, so it stands up off the nose as a big horn.
- Round the rump. Fold the rump point behind on an upright crease 3 cm from its tip, then fold the top corner there behind a little, all layers together.
- Round the back. Fold the top back corner of the rump behind a little, all layers together, so the big rump is round.
- Pleat: fold over. Fold the back part of the body over to the front on an upright crease through the middle of the back, all layers together.
- Pleat: fold back. Fold it back again on an upright crease 0.9 cm further forward. The pleat makes the body shorter and chunkier.
Out of the way!
Draw a small eye behind the horn, a nostril and a few wrinkle lines on the shoulder.
