How to fold an origami sea lion
A long diamond folded in half and stood on end. Crimp the head forward so the nose points up, split the bottom into front and back flippers, and balance a folded ball.
You need: A 15 cm square of brown paper, a 4.5 cm square of red, small scissors, glue and a white pen. Hard, 12 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. White side up, fold the left corner to the right corner, crease, and unfold.
- Make a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to lie along the middle crease.
- Long diamond. Fold the two upper edges in to the middle crease too, making a long brown diamond with a point at each end.
- Fold in half. Fold the right half behind the left half. The fold on the right is the sea lion's back.
- Head down. Fold the top 5 cm down toward you on a crease from the back edge, slanting a little up toward the chest.
- Head up. Fold the head back up on a crease from the same spot that slants down a little, so the nose points up and forward.
- Snip the bottom. Snip 4.5 cm up the back fold from the bottom point, so its front and back layers come apart.
- Fold the flippers. Fold the front layer's point forward from the end of the snip, and the back layer's point backward behind, so the sea lion stands on its flippers.
- The ball. Set the sea lion aside. Take the red square, white side up.
- Ball: corners in. Fold all four corners in to the middle.
- Ball: round it. Fold the four new corners behind, about 6 mm each, so the ball is nearly round.
- Balance the ball. Balance the ball on the tip of the nose and glue it there.
Ta-da!
Draw a shiny eye, a black nose at the tip, whiskers, and a white stripe round the ball.
