How to fold an origami snowy owl

Fold the corners in and the wings to the middle so a pale face and chest show, pleat a neck, cut the head and body round, then glue on yellow eyes and a branch.

You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, pale blue-grey on one side; a little yellow paper, a brown strip, scissors and glue. Hard, 10 steps, about 20 minutes.

Steps

  1. Fold the corners. White side up, fold each top corner in on a crease from 4 cm down the side to 2.5 cm along the top. Fold the bottom corners in a little smaller.
  2. Fold to the middle. Fold the left and right edges in to meet at the middle. These flaps are the wings; the white gaps at the top and bottom are face and chest.
  3. Pleat: fold up. Fold the whole bottom part up on a level crease just under the point of the face.
  4. Pleat: fold down. Fold it back down on a crease 1.4 cm higher, so a neat neck ledge is left across the owl.
  5. Round the owl. Cut the two top corners round for the head, and the two bottom corners round for the body, two short cuts at each corner.
  6. Eyes: new paper. Set the owl aside. Cut a yellow circle about 2 cm across for the first eye.
  7. Second eye. Set it aside and cut a second yellow circle just the same.
  8. Branch: new strip. Set the eyes aside. Take a brown strip about 20 × 2 cm, brown side down.
  9. Fold the branch. Fold the strip in half along its length, bottom edge up to the top, so the branch is thick and brown on the outside.
  10. Glue it together. Glue the owl onto the branch so its bottom edge sits across the middle. Glue the eyes on the pale face, either side of the point.

Whoo's watching?

Draw a big black pupil in each eye and a hooked black beak. Speckle the wings and chest with black flecks and ink the talons over the branch.
