How to fold an origami warty toad

Fold a square into a wide kite, slit short front legs from its sides, split the rump point into two long hind legs, swing them out and bend them back at the knee.

You need: 1 brown square (15 cm), scissors and a black pen. Hard, 14 steps, about 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Crease the middle. Coloured side up, like a diamond, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner.
  2. Open it. Unfold it again. The crease will guide the cuts later.
  3. Head end. Fold the edges at the left point behind on creases from the point to 7.5 cm above and below the middle crease.
  4. Rump end. Fold the edges at the right point behind so they meet at the middle crease, like a kite. The left end is the head.
  5. Side corners. Fold the top and bottom corners behind on creases 4.7 cm above and below the middle, so the body is wide and flat.
  6. Crease the leg strips. Fold the top edge down and the bottom edge up 1.7 cm, all layers, and crease hard. These give the front legs.
  7. Open them. Unfold both strips again.
  8. Slit the legs. Cut along each strip crease from the left end in 3.2 cm. Then cut the right point along the middle crease for 9 cm.
  9. Front legs. Fold each front strip out on a slanted crease from the end of its cut, so the short front legs reach forward and out.
  10. Hind legs. Fold each half of the split point out on a slanted crease from the end of the cut, so the two long hind legs stick out sideways.
  11. Knees. Fold each hind leg back on a slanted crease 3.4 cm out from the body, so it bends at the knee and the foot points back.
  12. Blunt the head. Fold the left point behind on an upright crease, leaving the front legs out, so the toad has a wide flat head.
  13. Round the head. Fold the two corners of the head behind, 0.6 cm along each edge, so the head is round.
  14. Head up. Turn the toad so its head points up.

Ribbit!

Draw two big shiny eyes on the corners of the head and lots of little dark warts on the back.
