How to fold an origami open treasure chest
Fold a brown square into a closed chest with a rim and a domed lid, snip the lid free almost to the back and swing it open. Add a folded heap of gold.
You need: A 15 cm brown square, a 12 × 8.5 cm gold rectangle, scissors, glue, a black pen and a white pen. Hard, 10 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Rim: fold down. Brown side up. Fold the top part down over the front on a line 6.5 cm from the top edge.
- Rim: fold back. Fold it back up 4 mm lower, leaving a thin pleat across the paper. That's the rim of the box.
- Domed lid. The top band is the lid. Fold both of its top corners behind on a slant, so the lid gets a rounded top.
- Close the lid. Fold the lid down over the box along the lid line, just above the rim. Crease it hard.
- Snip the lid free. Snip along the lid's fold from the front end, stopping 1.5 cm from the back. The bit left uncut is the hinge.
- Open the lid. Fold the lid up and back on a slanted crease from the end of the snip, so it swings open past upright, brown side out.
- Gold: new sheet. Set the chest aside. Take the gold rectangle, gold side up.
- Gold: heap it up. Fold both top corners behind on a slant, so the top rises to a hump.
- Gold: round it. Fold the point of the hump behind, so the heap is low and round.
- Fill the chest. Glue the heap of gold behind the box, so it pokes up over the rim in front of the open lid.
