How to fold an origami wizard
Fold a white beard band down and cut it to a point, slit and fold the robe into bell sleeves with white cuffs, then add a slit-brim hat with a floppy tip and a hooked staff.
You need: A 15 × 20 cm blue sheet, a 10 cm indigo square, a 3 × 21 cm brown strip, a 5.5 cm peach square, scissors, glue and a white pen. Hard, 25 steps, about 40 minutes.
Steps
- Robe: fold the beard band. Blue side up, long side upright. Fold the top edge down 5 cm. This white band will become the beard.
- Robe: slope the shoulders. Cut each top corner off through both layers, on a slant from 3.3 cm beside the middle down to 2 cm below the corner.
- Robe: cut the beard. Cut the white band only, both sides alike: curve in from beside the shoulder cuts down to a point at the band's bottom edge.
- Robe: crease the armpits. Fold the bottom edge behind on a level crease 10 cm above it, just under the beard's point.
- Robe: open it. Unfold it again. Above the crease are the sleeves; below it is the skirt.
- Robe: slit the sleeves. Cut along the crease from each side in to 3.75 cm from the middle. This frees the sleeves from the skirt.
- Robe: white trims. Fold each sleeve end over 1 cm, and the bottom edge up 1.2 cm, so a white band shows on the cuffs and the hem.
- Robe: flare the skirt. Fold the skirt's sides behind on slants from the end of each slit to 5 mm in from the bottom corners. The sleeves stay out.
- Hat: new sheet. Set the robe aside. Take the indigo square, white side up, turned like a diamond.
- Hat: fold a kite. Fold the two upper edges in to meet on the middle line.
- Hat: turn it over. Flip it over, so the smooth indigo side faces you.
- Hat: fold the bottom. Fold the bottom point behind, 5 mm below the side corners.
- Hat: crease the brim. Fold the bottom up on a level crease 1.5 cm above the bottom edge.
- Hat: open it. Unfold it. The strip under the crease is the brim.
- Hat: slit the brim. Cut along the brim crease from each side in to 2 cm from the middle.
- Hat: slim the cone. Above the brim, fold each side behind on a slant from the end of the slit up to the top point. The brim stays wide.
- Hat: flop the tip. Fold the top 3.5 cm of the cone down to the right on a slant, so the tip flops over.
- Staff: new sheet. Set the hat aside. Take the brown strip upright, white side up.
- Staff: fold in half. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right edge onto left.
- Staff: fold it thin. Fold it in half lengthwise again, so it is a thin stick.
- Staff: bend the top. Fold the top 4.5 cm of the stick out to the right at a right angle, on a slanted crease.
- Staff: hook it. Fold the end of the bent piece down on a slant, 2 cm from the stick, to finish the hook.
- Head: new sheet. Set the staff aside. Take the peach square, peach side up.
- Head: round it. Fold all four corners a little way behind to make a round face.
- Dress the wizard. Glue the robe over the bottom of the face, so the beard hangs from the chin. Glue the hat over the top, and the staff in his right hand.
Abracadabra!
Draw kind eyes, a nose and a white moustache. Add white stars and a moon all over the robe and hat, and a sparkle by the staff.
