How to fold an origami bearded gnome

Fold one red square into a pointy hat with a band, a white beard and a little red nose. Pleat a blue kite coat with a belt, and snip it to swing out two boots.

You need: A 15 cm red square, a 12 cm blue square, scissors, a glue stick and a black and a white pen. Hard, 15 steps, about 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Beard. Red square, red side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the bottom corner up on a level crease 3.2 cm below the middle. The white is his beard.
  2. Nose. Fold the tip of the beard back down on a level crease 2.5 cm above the middle. A little red nose sits on the beard.
  3. Hat band. Fold the top corner down on a level crease 7 mm above the nose crease.
  4. Hat band: fold it back. Fold it back up on a crease 9 mm lower. The ledge is the hat band, and the hat stands tall again.
  5. Point the beard. Fold each side behind on a slant from just above the beard, 3.8 cm from the middle, to 7 mm from the middle of the bottom edge.
  6. Pointy hat. Fold each side of the hat behind on a slant from its tip to the corner you just made. A tall, pointy hat!
  7. Coat: new sheet. Set the head aside. Take the blue square, blue side up, turned like a diamond.
  8. Coat: crease the middle. Fold the left corner over onto the right corner.
  9. Coat: open it. Open it again.
  10. Coat: kite behind. Fold the upper edges behind to meet on the middle line at the back.
  11. Boots: snip. Cut up the middle crease from the bottom point, 3.4 cm.
  12. Boots: swing them out. Fold each half of the bottom point out to the side on a slanted crease from the top of the snip. His white boots point out.
  13. Coat: belt. Fold the bottom of the coat up on a level crease 4.7 cm above the top of the snip.
  14. Coat: belt ledge. Fold it back down on a crease 9 mm higher. The ledge is his belt.
  15. Put him together. Glue the head over the top of the coat, so the beard hangs down his front.

Hello, garden!

Draw his bushy moustache and a white belt buckle. Stand him by a flower pot to guard the garden.
