How to fold an origami perching budgie
One square: a kite folded in half. Outside-reverse-fold a hooked beak, pleat the long tail so it hangs, round the head and sit the bird up.
You need: 1 green square (15 cm), white on the back, scissors and a black pen. Hard, 12 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. White side up, turned like a diamond, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner, crease and unfold.
- Kite. Fold the two edges at the right corner in to lie along the middle crease. That long point becomes the tail.
- Narrow the head end. Fold the edges at the left corner in a little, on creases from that corner to 8.3 cm above and below the middle of the crease.
- Fold in half. Fold the bottom half up onto the top half along the middle crease. The long fold at the bottom is the chest.
- Beak: over. Fold the left point over to the right on an upright crease 3.1 cm from its tip, all layers.
- Beak: back. Fold it back from the same point on the top edge, on a crease 1.4 cm further left at the bottom fold, so the beak hooks down.
- Tail: over. Fold the long right point over to the left on an upright crease 1.5 cm right of the middle, all layers.
- Tail: back. Fold it back from the same bottom point, on a crease 1.1 cm further right at the top edge, so the tail bends back.
- Snip the tail. Cut 3.8 cm along the tail's bottom fold from its tip, so its two sides come apart.
- Two tail feathers. Fold the front layers' tip up a little on a slanted crease from the end of the cut, so the tail splits into two long feathers.
- Round the head. Fold the top corner of the back behind, 1.7 cm down each edge, so the head is round.
- Sit it up. Turn the budgie upright, beak at the top, so it sits tall with its tail hanging down.
Pretty bird!
Draw a shiny eye above the beak and a few wavy stripes across the back of the head and wing.
