How to fold an origami chess knight
Fold one long dark sheet into a tall strip and pleat a ring round it. Reverse-fold the top forward into the horse's head, and the bottom forward and back into a wide base.
You need: Black paper 32 × 13 cm and a white pen. Hard, 10 steps, about 30 minutes.
Steps
- Stand it up. Start white side up and turn the paper so its long sides run up and down.
- Edges to the middle. Fold the left and right edges in to meet along the middle.
- Fold in half. Mountain-fold it in half along the middle, so the left half goes behind. Now it is a tall strip, dark on both sides.
- Collar: fold up. Halfway down, fold the bottom half up over the front, and the same behind.
- Collar: fold down. Fold it back down a little higher, on both sides. The pleat makes a ring round the neck, like a real chess piece.
- Head. Near the top, outside-reverse-fold the strip forward and down on a slant from the back edge. It hangs forward as the horse's head.
- Muzzle. Fold the bottom corner of the head up on a slant, through all its layers, so the head narrows to a long nose.
- Base. Near the bottom, outside-reverse-fold the strip forward on a 45° crease from the back edge, so the end points to the front.
- Back of the base. Fold the end back on itself, square across, so it runs out under the neck and past the back. Now the base is wide.
- Round the base. Fold the two top corners of the base behind on small slants, so it looks like the rounded foot of a chess piece.
Check!
Draw a white eye on the head. Jump it two squares and one across, the way only a knight can move!
