How to fold an origami garbage truck

Fold a green half square into a truck with a white windscreen and a sloping back. Glue on a grey lifter arm with a bin at its end and two black wheels.

You need: Half a 15 cm green square, a 1 × 4 cm grey strip, a 2 cm dark grey square, two 4 cm black squares, a glue stick and a black pen. Medium, 16 steps, about 20 minutes.

Steps

  1. Body: fold the bottom behind. Start with the green half square, green side up, long edge at the bottom. Fold the bottom quarter behind.
  2. Body: windscreen. Fold the top-right corner down in front on a slant. The white triangle is the windscreen of the cab.
  3. Body: slope the back. Fold the top-left corner behind on a long slant, so the back of the truck slopes down. Fold the bottom corners behind a little.
  4. Arm: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take the grey strip for the lifter arm, grey side up.
  5. Arm: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way, bottom half behind, so the arm is thin and stiff.
  6. Bin: new sheet. Set the arm aside. Take the dark grey square for the bin, grey side up.
  7. Bin: taper and lid. Fold the bottom corners behind on a slant so the bin narrows, and fold the top edge down in front a little for a white lid rim.
  8. Wheel 1: new sheet. Set the bin aside. Take a small black square, white side up.
  9. Wheel 1: corners in. Fold all four corners in to meet in the middle.
  10. Wheel 1: hubcap. Fold each point back out a little, so a small white square shows in the middle. That's the hubcap.
  11. Wheel 1: round it. Fold the four points of the square a little way behind, so the wheel looks round.
  12. Wheel 2: new sheet. Set the first wheel aside and take the other black square, white side up.
  13. Wheel 2: corners in. Fold all four corners in to the middle.
  14. Wheel 2: hubcap. Fold each point back out a little for the hubcap.
  15. Wheel 2: round it. Fold the four points behind to round it off.
  16. Put the truck together. Glue on the wheels, half showing below. Glue the arm behind the back, sloping up and out, and the bin on its end, leaning towards the truck.

Bin day!

Draw the gap behind the cab, ribs on the container, a white stripe, the door and a headlight. Empty all the bins on the street!
