How to fold an origami grandfather clock

Fold the ends of one long brown strip over, snip them free and open them again, so the case slims behind while the hood and plinth stay wide. Add a folded cream dial.

You need: Brown paper 10 × 31 cm, a 4.5 cm cream square, scissors, glue and a black pen. Hard, 14 steps, about 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Hood and plinth. Brown side up. Fold the top end down 10 cm and the bottom end up 3 cm. Crease both well.
  2. Snip the sides. Snip along both folds from each side edge, 2 cm in. These snips free the hood and plinth from the case.
  3. Slim the case. Fold both long sides of the case behind, from snip to snip. The flaps folded down stay wide.
  4. Open the ends. Fold the hood back up and the plinth back down. Now the clock is wide at the top and bottom and slim in between.
  5. Plinth sides. Fold the plinth's sides behind a little, so it's a bit narrower than the hood but wider than the case.
  6. Cornice: fold down. Near the top of the hood, fold the top edge down over the front.
  7. Cornice: fold back. Fold it straight back up a little lower, leaving a thin pleat across the hood. That's the cornice ledge.
  8. Pediment. Fold both top corners of the hood behind on a slant, then fold the peak's tip behind, for the crown on top.
  9. Flat top. Fold the very tip of the peak behind, so the crown has a small flat top.
  10. Dial: new sheet. Set the clock aside. Take the cream square, white side up.
  11. Dial: corners in. Fold all four corners in to meet in the middle.
  12. Dial: centre. Fold each point back out a little, so a small white square shows in the middle.
  13. Dial: round it. Fold the four points of the square a little way behind, so the dial is round.
  14. Add the dial. Glue the dial on the hood, under the crown.

Tick tock!

Draw two clock hands on the dial and a pendulum swinging in the case. Stand it in a dolls' house hall.
