How to fold an origami hippo face

Pleat the bottom of a square into a wide hippo muzzle, snip the step and fold the head narrower above it, then cut two tiny ears from the top. Round it off and draw huge nostrils.

You need: 1 square sheet, 15 cm, grey or purple on one side, scissors, a black pen and a white gel pen. Medium, 10 steps, about 12 minutes.

Steps

  1. Head: crease the middle. Start coloured side up. Fold the square in half, right side over onto the left.
  2. Head: open it again. Unfold it. The crease marks the middle, so you can cut the ears evenly.
  3. Head: crease the ear strip. Fold the top edge down about 1.5 cm.
  4. Head: open the strip. Unfold it. The ears will come from this strip.
  5. Muzzle: fold up. Fold the bottom edge up until it is about 2 cm from the top edge.
  6. Muzzle: fold back down. Fold the same edge back down on a crease just above the last one. A thin step hides under the muzzle, so it can stay wide while the head gets narrower.
  7. Muzzle: snip the step. Cut along the line at the top of the muzzle from each side, about 1.5 cm in. This frees the muzzle's top corners.
  8. Head: sides behind. Fold each side of the head behind on a slant, from the end of the snip up to 3 cm in along the top. The muzzle stays wide.
  9. Head: snip the ears. In the top strip, cut away the middle between two slanted snips, leaving a small ear at each corner. Round the ears' tops.
  10. Muzzle: round it. Snip all four corners of the muzzle round, the bottom ones more, so it bulges out under the head.
