How to fold an origami humpback whale

A kite folded in half along the back. Fold up the belly, snip it and swing it down as the long flipper, split the tail into flukes and tip the whale into a dive.

You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), dark slate blue on one side and white on the other, scissors, a white pen and a black pen. Hard, 9 steps, about 20 minutes.

Steps

  1. Crease the middle. Blue side up, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner, crease, and unfold.
  2. Make a kite. Fold the two right-hand edges behind to meet along the middle crease, so the front stays blue.
  3. Fold in half. Fold the top half behind along the middle crease. The fold is the whale's back, the left corner is the snout.
  4. Fold up the belly. Fold the bottom of the belly up behind through all layers on a level crease 4 cm below the back.
  5. Snip the flipper free. Snip along the new fold from the back end of the hidden strip forward, stopping 3 cm from the snout.
  6. Swing down the flipper. Fold the snipped strip down behind on a slant from the end of the snip, so a long flipper hangs back under the body.
  7. Snip the tail. Snip 3 cm along the back fold from the tail tip, so the tail's front and back layers come apart.
  8. Split the flukes. Fold the front tip down on a slant from the end of the snip. The back tip stays straight, so the tail splits in two.
  9. Dive!. Tip the whale nose-down, so its flukes splay up and down behind it.

Whoosh!

Draw a small eye above the end of the mouth, a long curved mouth line and a row of white bumps on the head.
