How to fold an origami moose
Fold a triangle into a body with long legs and a hump, crimp the neck and long head down and cut a dewlap. Fold and cut a tan square into wide pointed antlers and glue them on.
You need: 2 squares: 15 cm dark brown and 6 cm tan, small scissors, a ruler and glue. Hard, 25 steps, about 32 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Start with the big square. White side up, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner. The long fold at the top is the moose's back.
- Crease the middle. Fold the triangle in half, right point onto the left point, and crease it hard. This crease marks the back of the front leg.
- Open it. Unfold it back into the triangle.
- Crease the neck line. Fold the right point over on an upright crease 1.4 cm right of the middle crease, and crease it hard. The neck starts here.
- Open it. Unfold it again.
- Crease the back leg. Fold the left point over on an upright crease 2.7 cm left of the middle crease, and crease it. This marks the front of the back leg.
- Open it. Unfold it again.
- Cut the legs. Cut the bottom point off 6.6 cm below the top. Cut up the back two leg creases to 3.3 cm below the top, the neck crease to 3 cm, and across. Slim the legs.
- Hump and rump. Cut the back so it falls from the shoulder to the rump in three short cuts, then slim the back leg down to the hoof. Cut the neck's edge sloping down.
- Head back. Fold each layer of the whole neck and head back over the body, on the neck crease. The point is cut off 6.6 cm out.
- Neck down. Fold it out again on a crease from the top of the shoulder, so the neck reaches forward a little lower than the hump.
- Head in. Fold the head end back along the neck, on a crease straight across the neck 3 cm from the shoulder.
- Jaw and dewlap. Cut up the fold to 2.5 cm from the top. Cut the jaw from there to the chin and snip the nose corners. Cut the throat from there down to a point: the dewlap.
- Head down. Fold the head out again on a crease from the same top corner, so the long head hangs down and forward. Glue the layers together.
- Antlers: new sheet. Set the moose aside. Take the small tan square, white side up.
- Fold in half. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge. The fold at the bottom will sit on the moose's head.
- Fold in half again. Fold the right edge over onto the left edge.
- And again. Fold the right half over onto the left once more.
- And once more. Fold the right half over onto the left one last time, so you have a narrow stack of sixteen layers.
- Cut the points. Cut the top of the stack to a point, cutting 7 mm down each side through all the layers at once.
- Open one fold. Unfold the last fold.
- Open the next. Unfold the next fold too.
- Notch and fan. Cut a slant from 7.5 mm left of the fold at the top down to 9 mm above the bottom. Cut the outer bottom corner off from 1.9 cm up the side.
- Open it out. Unfold the middle fold. The antlers spread into two wide palms, each with three points along its top.
- Glue on the antlers. Glue the moose's head over the middle of the antlers' fold, so the two palms spread out wide above its head.
A mighty moose!
Give it a white eye with a dark middle on each side and dot the nostril. Stand it on its long legs.
