How to fold an origami narwhal
A kite with a white belly showing, folded in half and laid on its side. Round the head, lift the tail, snip and spread the flukes, then glue in a spiral tusk.
You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), grey-blue on one side, a 2.4 × 8 cm strip of cream paper, scissors, glue and a black pen. Hard, 13 steps, about 20 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. Fold the top corner down to the bottom corner, crease, and unfold.
- Fold in the head. Fold the left corner in to the middle of the paper.
- Make a kite. Fold the two right-hand edges in toward the middle crease, leaving a gap of 2.7 cm at the left end, closing to nothing at the tail point.
- Fold in half. Fold the bottom half behind along the middle crease. The fold is the belly, the head points left.
- Round the head. Fold the top corner of the head behind through all layers, on a slant from 2.2 cm down the front. Fold the chin's tip behind too.
- Lift the tail. Fold the tail up on a crease from 6.4 cm before its tip, slanting a little up toward the tip, so the tail rises gently.
- Snip the tail. Snip 1.5 cm along the tail's folded edge from the tip, so its front and back layers come apart.
- Spread the flukes. Fold the front tip up and forward from the end of the snip, and the back tip down and back, so the flukes spread into a V.
- The tusk. Set the narwhal aside. Take the 2.4 × 8 cm cream strip, lying the long way across.
- Tusk: fold in half. Fold the strip in half the long way, bottom edge up to the top.
- Tusk: and again. Fold it in half the long way again, so it's a thin stick.
- Tusk: cut a point. Cut both long edges in to a sharp point at the left end, keeping the right end full width.
- Glue in the tusk. Glue the wide end of the tusk between the head's layers, at the top of the face, pointing forward and a little up.
Unicorn of the sea!
Draw a spiral line round the tusk, a small eye and a few freckles on the back.
