How to fold an origami pufferfish
Fold a square into a thin point of sixteen layers and make two snips: it opens into a round fish ringed with sixteen spikes. Add a tail and a surprised face.
You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), yellow on one side, a small orange square (8 cm), scissors, glue and a black pen. Medium, 12 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. The middle of the top fold is the middle of your fish.
- In half again. Fold the left edge over to the right edge, making a small square.
- Corner to corner. Fold it in half from the middle corner (top left) to the opposite corner, bringing the bottom edge up onto the top edge.
- And once more. Fold the slanted edge up onto the top edge, from the middle corner. Now it is a thin point of 16 layers. Crease hard.
- Snip the spikes. Make two snips across the wide end: from 6.2 cm along each long edge out to a point 7.3 cm out in the middle.
- Unfold. Unfold the last fold.
- Unfold again. Unfold the corner-to-corner fold.
- And again. Unfold the left half.
- Open it flat. Unfold the top half. A round body ringed with sixteen spikes!
- Tail: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take the small orange square, orange side up, turned like a diamond.
- Tail: fold in half. Fold the left corner behind to the right corner. The long folded edge is the end of the tail.
- Glue on the tail. Glue the tail behind the left side of the body, its point hidden and the wide end sticking out.
Puff! A pufferfish!
Draw a big eye, a pouty round mouth and a few freckles. Blow on it and watch it puff up... well, almost.
