How to fold an origami scottie
Fold a triangle, crease and cut four short legs, reverse-fold a carrot tail straight up, lift and crimp a long square head with a beard, and glue on little ears.
You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, black on one side, a small black square for the ears, scissors, glue and a white pen. Hard, 19 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. White side up, fold the top corner down to the bottom corner. The long fold at the top is the Scottie's back.
- Crease the front legs. Fold the right part over on a crease from 0.8 cm right of the middle on the top fold to 1.5 cm right of it 4.7 cm down. Crease hard.
- Open it. Unfold it back into the triangle.
- Crease the hind legs. Fold the left part over on a crease from 3.5 cm left of the middle on the top fold to 4.1 cm left of it 4.7 cm down.
- Open it. Unfold it again. These creases mark the inside edges of the legs.
- Tail back. Outside-reverse-fold the left end back over the body, on an upright crease 5.4 cm left of the middle.
- Cut the legs. Cut the bottom point off level, 4.7 cm below the top fold, and the right point off square 2.7 cm in. Cut up both leg creases, then across between their tops.
- Cut the tail. Cut up the tail fold, leaving 0.9 cm at the top. Trim the tail flaps to a strip 2.6 cm long, and snip the top corner of the rump round.
- Lift the tail. Outside-reverse-fold the tail out on a crease from its bottom corner, so it sticks out behind.
- Neck back. Outside-reverse-fold the right end back over the body, on an upright crease 2.7 cm right of the middle.
- Cut the neck. Cut up the neck fold, leaving 2 cm at the top. Trim the neck flaps to a strip 2 cm wide at the fold and 2.6 cm at the tip.
- Lift the neck. Outside-reverse-fold the neck up on a crease from its bottom corner, so it stands up and leans a little forward.
- Head back. Outside-reverse-fold the top 2.7 cm of the neck back and down, on a crease slanting across the neck from its back edge.
- Head forward. Outside-reverse-fold the head back out on a crease from the same corner, so the nose points forward.
- Round the paws. Snip both bottom corners off each leg, so the paws are round.
- Ears: a small square. Set the Scottie aside. Take a 1.5 cm square, white side up, turned like a diamond.
- Ears: a kite. Fold the two top edges in to meet on the middle line, so the top is a sharp point.
- Ears: fold the bottom. Fold the bottom point behind, level with the side corners. Make a second ear the same.
- Glue on the ears. Glue an ear behind the top of the head on each side, points up.
Och aye!
Colour the white bit under the chin black. With a white pen, draw a bushy eyebrow over a bright eye and a shine on the nose.
