How to fold an origami gliding stingray
A kite narrowed into a long tail. Swing the top of each narrow flap back out as a wide wing, fold the front to a point and pleat a kink into the tail.
You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), sandy brown on one side and white on the other, and a black pen. Hard, 9 steps, about 20 minutes.
Steps
- Crease the middle. White side up, fold the left corner onto the right corner, crease, and unfold.
- Make a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to the middle crease, so the bottom point is long.
- Narrow it. Fold the new lower edges in to the middle again, making a long thin point: the tail.
- Spread the wings. Fold the top of each narrow flap back out, on a slant from where it meets the top edge to the middle 6 cm above the tail tip. These are the wings.
- Turn it over. Turn the ray over, so it is brown all over.
- Point the front. Fold the top right edge behind, on a slant from the right wing tip to 1 cm right of the middle, 3.5 cm below the top corner.
- And the other side. Fold the top left edge behind the same way, so the front of the ray is a wide, low point.
- Pleat the tail. Fold the end of the tail up on a level crease 4 cm above its tip.
- Kink the tail. Fold it back down on a crease just above, slanting a little, so the tail points down again with a small kink.
Glide!
Draw two small eyes near the front of the ray.
