How to fold an origami ocean sunfish
A tall sheet with its top and bottom strips folded behind. Snip the strips free and swing them out as two tall fins, pleat the back into a rudder band and round the face.
You need: 1 A4 sheet, silver-grey on one side and white on the other, scissors and a black pen. Hard, 9 steps, about 20 minutes.
Steps
- Fold the top strip behind. Grey side up, short edges at top and bottom, fold the top edge behind on a level crease 5 cm down.
- And the bottom strip. Fold the bottom edge behind the same way, 5 cm up.
- Snip the strips. Snip along both folds from the right edge, 9 cm in, so the right ends of the hidden strips come free.
- Swing out the fins. Fold each freed strip out behind on a slant from the end of its snip, so one stands up tall and one hangs down tall.
- Point the fins. Fold the front edge of each fin behind on a long slant to the middle of its end, so both fins come to a point.
- Fold the back over. Fold the right edge of the body over to the front on an upright crease 4 cm in.
- Pleat the rudder. Fold the flap back out so its edge meets the fold. The thick band at the back is the sunfish's stubby rudder.
- Round the face. Fold the two front corners behind on long slants, from 5 cm down the front edge to 6 cm along the top or bottom edge.
- Round it more. Fold the two new corners at the nose behind a little, so the face is a smooth curve.
Hello, sunfish!
Draw a round eye near the front, a little round mouth at the nose and a small curved side fin.
