How to fold an origami tambourine
Fold a red square into a round rim and a tan square into the drum head, add two ribbons with a flutter fold, then draw the jingles round the rim.
You need: A 15 cm red square, an 11 cm tan square, two 4 x 15 cm strips of yellow and blue paper, a black pen, white paint pen and glue. Medium, 12 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Rim: round it. Start with the red square, coloured side up. Fold all four corners behind so it has eight even sides.
- Rim: rounder. Fold each of the eight new corners a little way behind, so the rim is nearly a circle.
- Head: new square. Set the rim aside. Take the smaller tan square, coloured side up.
- Head: round it. Fold its four corners behind the same way, so it has eight even sides too.
- Head: rounder. Fold its eight new corners a little way behind too.
- Ribbon: yellow. Set the head aside. Take the yellow ribbon, coloured side up.
- Ribbon: in half. Fold the ribbon in half the long way, folding behind, so it's yellow on both sides.
- Ribbon: flutter. Fold the lower half of the ribbon out to the right on a slant, so it flutters.
- Ribbon: blue. Set it aside and take the blue ribbon, coloured side up.
- Ribbon: in half. Fold it in half the long way behind, like the yellow one.
- Ribbon: flutter. Fold its lower half out to the right on a slant too.
- Glue it together. Glue the head in the middle of the rim, so a red ring shows. Glue both ribbons behind the rim at the bottom right, so they stream out.
Shake, shake, tap!
Draw a round white jingle, outlined in black, on each side of the rim. Shake it, then tap the head with your hand.
