How to fold an origami tugboat
Fold a red square in half and pleat both ends on steep slants, so the decks drop and the wheelhouse stands tall. Add a folded black funnel.
You need: A 15 cm square, red on one side, a 2 × 5 cm black piece, a glue stick and a black pen. Medium, 10 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Lay the square white side up. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge. It's red on both sides now.
- Fold the bottom behind. Fold the bottom part behind, a bit less than half way up, for a thick red strip.
- Hull: steep folds. Fold each end over on a steep slant that starts on the top edge, near the middle. The left one goes a little deeper.
- Hull: fold them back. Fold each end back out on a parallel slant, a finger's width away. The ends drop: low decks, and the wheelhouse stands up between them.
- Hull: straight bottom. Fold the uneven bottom behind on one straight line, so the hull sits flat.
- Hull: bow and stern. Fold the bottom-right corner behind on a long slant for a raked bow, and the left end behind on a slight slant for a neat stern.
- Funnel: new sheet. Set the boat aside. Take the black piece, black side up, standing tall.
- Funnel: white band. Fold the top edge down a little, so a white band shows at the top.
- Funnel: lean it back. Turn the funnel so its top leans a little to the left.
- Glue on the funnel. Glue the funnel behind the wheelhouse, so its top sticks up above the roof.
Toot toot!
Draw the wheelhouse windows and black tyres hanging along the side and on the bow. Add ripples.
