How to fold an origami canoe

Fold a square into a long slim hull, then turn up both ends so they rise above the sides like a real canoe. Fold a strip into a paddle and lay it across.

You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm, and a strip of brown paper for the paddle, about 1.2 × 9 cm. Easy, 8 steps, about 8 minutes.

Steps

  1. Flatten the diamond. Colour side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the top and bottom corners behind, each about a third of the way to the middle.
  2. Fold in half. Fold the top half behind along the middle. Now you have a long boat shape with pointed ends.
  3. Turn up the ends. Fold each pointed end behind on a slant, the crease starting on the top edge and sloping down inwards. The points peek up above the sides.
  4. Paddle: new sheet. Set the canoe aside. Take the brown strip, brown side up, standing tall.
  5. Paddle: thin handle. Fold both long edges behind on a slant, from the middle of the strip to near the top. The top becomes a thin handle, the bottom a wide blade.
  6. Paddle: round the blade. Fold the two bottom corners of the blade a little way behind.
  7. Tilt the paddle. Lean the paddle over, handle to the right.
  8. Paddle in the canoe. Glue the canoe over the paddle, so the handle sticks up above it and the blade shows down below, dipping in the water.

Paddle away!

Float it on a blue sheet of paper for a lake, or add a paper paddler in the middle.
