How to fold an origami rowing boat

Fold a brown half square into a boat with a pointed bow and a white rim. Fold two light strips into oars that slope out into the water.

You need: Half a 15 cm brown square, two 1 × 10 cm light brown strips, a glue stick and a black pen. Easy, 9 steps, about 10 minutes.

Steps

  1. Hull: fold the bottom behind. Start with the brown half square, brown side up, long edge at the bottom. Fold the bottom strip behind, a bit less than half.
  2. Hull: white rim. Fold the top edge down in front, just a thin strip. It shows white: the rim of the boat.
  3. Hull: bow and stern. Fold the bottom-right corner behind on a long slant for the pointed bow, and the bottom-left corner behind on a short slant for the stern.
  4. Oar 1: new sheet. Set the hull aside. Take a light brown strip, coloured side up, standing tall.
  5. Oar 1: thin handle. Fold both long sides behind on a slant, from a third of the way up down to the top, so the top is a thin handle and the bottom a wide blade.
  6. Oar 2: new sheet. Set the first oar aside. Take the other strip, coloured side up.
  7. Oar 2: thin handle. Make the second oar just like the first: fold both long sides behind on a slant to narrow the handle.
  8. Oar 2: tilt it. Turn the oar so it slopes, its blade pointing down to the right.
  9. Put in the oars. Glue the oars on the side of the boat, crossing the rim near the middle, handles just poking up and blades sloping out and down into the water.

Row, row, row!

Draw planks along the hull, the oarlocks on the rim and a few ripples where the oars dip in. Row it gently down the stream!
