How to fold an origami drawer box
Fold a low tray from a sheet folded in half, then crease a strip into four panels and wrap it round the tray as a sleeve. Pull the drawer out to peek inside.
You need: 1 rectangle, 9 × 23 cm, for the drawer and an 18 × 8 cm strip in a second colour for the sleeve. Medium, 8 steps, about 15 minutes.
Steps
- Drawer: fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. Both sides are now coloured.
- Drawer: crease the sides. Fold the left and right edges in by 1.3 cm, crease well, then unfold.
- Drawer: crease the ends. Fold the top and bottom edges in by the same 1.3 cm, crease well, then unfold.
- Sleeve: new strip. Set the drawer aside. Take the yellow strip, yellow side up, lying across.
- Sleeve: top and bottom. Crease the strip where the drawer's floor will sit: fold the left end over 7 cm in, and the right end so a matching panel is left. Unfold.
- Sleeve: the sides. Crease the two narrow side panels, 1.7 cm wide, next to each big panel, then unfold. The thin strip left at the right end is the glue tab.
- Line them up. Lay the drawer below the strip, ready to wrap.
- Build the drawer box. Raise the drawer's walls, tucking each corner inside. Wrap the strip round it and glue the tab under the top. Then pull the drawer halfway out.
Open the drawer!
Hide a tiny note, a ring or a sweet inside and slide it shut. Stack a few for a mini chest of drawers.
