How to fold an origami firework
Fan-fold a square into a slim point and make one long cut: it opens into an eight-ray burst. Make a smaller yellow one, turn it between the red rays and glue it on top.
You need: 1 red square (15 cm), 1 yellow square (10 cm), scissors, a glue stick and a white gel pen. Medium, 20 steps, about 20 minutes.
Steps
- Red: fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. The middle of the fold is the centre.
- Red: in half again. Fold the right half over onto the left half. The centre is now the corner at the top right.
- Red: fold a slim point. Fold the right edge over onto the top edge, creasing from the centre corner.
- Red: slimmer still. Fold the slanted edge up onto the top edge again, from the same corner. Crease hard through all the layers.
- Red: cut a long spike. Cut in one straight line from the long edge, just short of its end, down to the other edge 1.5 cm from the centre corner.
- Red: unfold. Unfold the last fold.
- Red: unfold again. Unfold the next fold.
- Red: and again. Unfold the left half back to the right.
- Red: open it flat. Unfold the top half. Eight long rays!
- Yellow: new sheet. Set the red burst aside. Take the yellow square, yellow side up.
- Yellow: fold in half. Same fold as on the red sheet.
- Yellow: in half again. Same fold as on the red sheet.
- Yellow: fold a slim point. Same fold as on the red sheet.
- Yellow: slimmer still. Same fold as on the red sheet.
- Yellow: cut a spike. Cut the same long spike as before, from the end of the long edge to near the centre corner.
- Yellow: unfold. Unfold the last fold.
- Yellow: unfold again. Unfold the next fold.
- Yellow: and again. Unfold the left half back to the right.
- Yellow: open it flat. Unfold the top half: a smaller yellow burst.
- Glue the bursts. Glue the yellow burst on the middle of the red one, turned so each yellow ray points between two red rays.
Boom! Sparkle!
Dot white sparks along the red rays. Stick it on a dark window or card for New Year's Eve.
