How to fold an origami party popper

Fan-fold half a square, snip a point and open it into a spray of streamers. Fold a kite into a slim cone, stripe it, and glue the burst into its mouth.

You need: Half a yellow 21 cm square, a purple 15 cm square, scissors, a glue stick, a black pen and a white gel pen. Medium, 14 steps, about 15 minutes.

Steps

  1. Burst: fold in half. Yellow side up, long edge at the bottom. Fold the right edge over onto the left edge.
  2. Burst: edge to the bottom. Fold the folded edge down onto the bottom edge, creasing from the bottom-right corner.
  3. Burst: and again. Fold the slanted edge down onto the bottom edge again, from the same corner.
  4. Burst: once more. And once more: slanted edge onto the bottom edge. Crease hard through all the layers.
  5. Burst: snip a spike. Cut in one straight line from the end of the slanted edge down to the bottom edge, 3 cm from the corner.
  6. Burst: unfold. Unfold the last fold.
  7. Burst: unfold again. Unfold the next fold.
  8. Burst: and again. Unfold the next one.
  9. Burst: open it. Open it flat: a fan of eight streamers.
  10. Cone: new sheet. Set the burst aside. Take the purple square, white side up, turned like a diamond, and crease it from top to bottom.
  11. Cone: fold a kite. Fold the two lower edges in to meet on the middle crease.
  12. Cone: flat top. Fold the top point behind, level with the tops of the flaps. That is the open mouth of the cone.
  13. Glue in the burst. Glue the corner of the burst behind the mouth of the cone, so the streamers fan out of it.
  14. Tilt it. Tilt it so the cone points down to the left, like it just popped.

Pop!

Draw white stripes round the cone. Dot white confetti on the streamers. Happy birthday!
