How to fold an origami gift bag
A rectangle with a rim folded round its edges rises into a tall, narrow bag. Two thin folded straps glued inside the top make the loop handles.
You need: 1 rectangle, 20 × 18 cm, and two 7 × 1.5 cm strips of gold paper. Medium, 10 steps, about 15 minutes.
Steps
- Rim at top and bottom. With the long edges at the top and bottom, fold a band about 8 mm wide over along each of them.
- Rim at the sides. Fold the same band over along the left and right edges. The coloured rim goes all the way round.
- Crease the side walls. Fold the left edge over to about 3.5 cm past the middle, crease, then unfold. Do the same with the right edge.
- Crease the front and back. Fold the top edge down to about 5 cm past the middle, crease, then unfold. Do the same with the bottom edge. The floor is a thin strip.
- Front strap. Set the bag aside. Take a gold strip, white side up, and lay it on the lower wall just inside the rim.
- Fold the strap in half. Fold the bottom edge of the strip up to its top edge to make a thin strap.
- Back strap. Set it aside. Lay the second gold strip, white side up, on the upper wall just inside the rim.
- Fold it in half too. Fold the top edge of this strip down to its bottom edge.
- Glue the strap ends. Put the bag under the straps. Glue only the two ends of each strap inside the rim of its wall, about 3 cm apart.
- Open the bag. Lift the four walls up straight and fold each corner flat inside. Push the strap ends together so each strap bows up into a loop.
Ready for a party!
Pop a small present or some sweets inside. Fold a little tag, write a name on it and tie it to a handle.
