How to fold an origami hard hat

Fold the bottom edge up for the brim and the top edge down to meet it, slope the dome's sides behind so the brim sticks out, then pleat a ridge down the middle.

You need: 1 square sheet, yellow on one side. Easy, 6 steps, about 5 minutes.

Steps

  1. The brim. Put the square white side up. Fold the bottom edge up a little way, about a sixth of the square. That yellow band is the brim.
  2. The dome. Fold the top edge down so it meets the top of the brim. Now it is all yellow.
  3. Ridge: fold over. Fold the left half over onto the right half, right on the middle line.
  4. Ridge: fold back. Fold it back to the left on a line a few millimetres to the right. The little step down the middle is the hat's ridge.
  5. Slope the dome. Fold the sides of the dome behind on slants, from the brim's bottom corners up past a point a little way in. The brim now sticks out.
  6. Round the top. Fold the two top corners a little way behind, so the dome is round.
