How to fold an origami hina doll
A traditional doll for Hinamatsuri, Japan's Doll Festival. A red triangle becomes the robe with a white collar, and a small black square folds into a face framed by black hair.
You need: 1 square sheet, 15 x 15 cm, red on one side, 1 black square 7.5 x 7.5 cm, a glue stick and a pen. Medium, 7 steps, about 10 minutes.
Steps
- Robe: triangle. Start with the robe. White side up, like a diamond, fold the bottom corner up to the top corner.
- Robe: collar. Fold the top point of the front layer down 3.5 cm, so it shows white as the collar. Fold the back layer's point behind on the same line.
- Robe: sleeves. Fold the two wide bottom corners behind, about 2 cm, so the sleeves end square.
- Head: new sheet. Set the robe aside. Take the small black square, black side up, like a diamond.
- Head: face. Fold the bottom corner up to 1 cm below the top corner. The white triangle is the face; the black at its sides is the hair, parted in the middle.
- Head: shape it. Fold the left and right corners behind, 1 cm, and fold the top point behind just above the face, so the head is neat.
- Glue on the head. Glue the robe behind the head, so the chin sits on the white collar.
Happy Doll Festival!
Draw two little closed eyes and a tiny mouth. Fold a second doll from a blue robe as her emperor.
