How to fold an origami carp streamer
A traditional Japanese fold: a long sheet folds into a carp with a white mouth band, a slimmer tail end and a forked tail, ready to fly on a stick.
You need: 1 sheet of A4 or Letter paper, red or blue on one side, scissors and a black pen. Medium, 8 steps, about 8 minutes.
Steps
- Mouth band. Coloured side up, long side across. Fold the right short edge over by 2 cm. This white band will be the carp's open mouth.
- Turn it over. Flip it over, so the band is underneath on the left.
- Fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge and crease well.
- Open it. Open it again, so the crease runs across the middle.
- Edges to the middle. Fold the top and bottom edges in to meet at the middle crease. The white band now shows at the left end.
- Slim the tail end. Fold the top and bottom edges a little behind on a slant: nothing at the mouth, 1.5 cm at the right end.
- Snip the tail. Cut along the middle from the right end, about 6 cm in.
- Fork the tail. Fold the inner edge of each tail half behind, creasing from the end of the cut to the outer corner. The tail spreads into a V.
Koinobori!
Draw a big round eye behind the white mouth and a few scales. Tape it to a stick and run, so it flies in the wind.
How to fly it
- Tape the head end to a straw or a thin stick.
- Hold it up in the wind or run with it, so the carp swims through the air.
- Fold a big one for each grown-up and a small one for each child, like families do in Japan.
