How to fold an origami oak tree
Fold a green square into a slim wedge and make one curved cut: it opens into a round crown with eight leafy bumps. Glue it on a thick brown trunk with spreading roots.
You need: A 15 cm green square, a 6.75 × 11 cm brown piece, scissors and a glue stick. Medium, 12 steps, about 12 minutes.
Steps
- Crown: fold in half. Start with the green square, green side up. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge.
- Crown: in half again. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge. The corner where the two folds meet is the middle of the crown.
- Crown: fold to a wedge. Fold it in half on the slant, from the middle corner, so the left fold lies along the top fold. Crease hard.
- Crown: cut a bump. Cut across the wide end in a round bump: 6.5 cm from the middle along both folds, rising to 7.5 cm out in between.
- Crown: open the slant. Unfold the slanted fold.
- Crown: open again. Unfold the next fold.
- Crown: open flat. Unfold the first fold too. Eight leafy bumps go all the way round the crown.
- Trunk: new sheet. Set the crown aside. Take the brown piece, brown side up, standing tall.
- Trunk: fold in half. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
- Trunk: cut a slant. Cut from the top, 1.5 cm from the fold, down to the open bottom corner.
- Trunk: open it. Open it out. A thick trunk, wider at the foot.
- Glue on the crown. Glue the crown over the top of the trunk, so the trunk shows below it.
