How to fold an origami kettle

Pleat the top of a square into a lid and knob, fold the corners behind for a round body, then add a tapered spout and a black strip bent into a handle over the top.

You need: A 15 cm square and a 4 x 9 cm strip of red paper, a 2 x 20 cm strip of black paper, scissors and glue. Medium, 11 steps, about 12 minutes.

Steps

  1. Body: flat top. Body first. Put the square red side up, turned like a diamond. Fold the top corner behind about 3.5 cm, making a flat top.
  2. Body: pleat the knob. Turn it over. Fold that point back up on a line about 1 cm below the top edge, so its tip pokes about 1.5 cm above it. Turn back: that's the knob.
  3. Body: sides behind. Fold the left and right corners behind, about 3 cm each, so the sides are straight.
  4. Body: wide base. Fold the bottom corner behind about 5.5 cm, so the kettle sits on a wide flat base.
  5. Spout: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take the 4 x 9 cm red strip, white side up, standing tall.
  6. Spout: fold in half. Fold it in half along its length, left edge over onto the right edge, and glue it flat.
  7. Spout: taper it. Cut a long slim slice off the open edge, from the bottom corner to near the fold at the top, so it tapers. Snip the top on a slant.
  8. Handle: new sheet. Set the spout aside. Take the black strip, white side up, lying across.
  9. Handle: fold in half. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge and glue it flat.
  10. Handle: bend the ends. About 4 cm from the middle, fold each end straight down on a 45° slant. The handle is an arch with two legs.
  11. Put it together. Glue the handle's legs behind the top of the kettle, the arch over the knob. Glue the spout behind the lower right, leaning out and up.

Put the kettle on!

Draw a curved line under the knob for the lid and a white shine on the side. Whistle while it boils!
