How to fold an origami oven mitt

A square folds into a long mitt with a round top. Glue on a folded thumb behind, a dark cuff across the bottom and a little bent loop, then draw the quilting.

You need: A 15 cm square and a 6 x 10 cm strip of orange paper, a 10 x 6 cm and a 1.5 x 9 cm strip of dark paper, and glue. Medium, 12 steps, about 12 minutes.

Steps

  1. Thumb: fold in half. Thumb first. Stand the orange strip tall, white side up. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
  2. Thumb: round the top. Fold the two top corners behind, about 1 cm each way, so the thumb is round.
  3. Cuff: new sheet. Set the thumb aside. Take the wide dark strip, white side up, lying across.
  4. Cuff: fold in half. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge.
  5. Loop: new sheet. Set the cuff aside. Take the thin dark strip, white side up, lying across.
  6. Loop: fold in half. Fold the top edge down onto the bottom edge.
  7. Loop: bend the ends. Just over 1 cm from the middle, fold each end straight down on a 45° slant, making a little arch.
  8. Mitt: new sheet. Set the loop aside. Take the orange square, orange side up.
  9. Mitt: sides behind. Fold the left and right edges behind, 3 cm each, so the mitt is long and slim.
  10. Mitt: round the top. Fold the two top corners behind on a slant, about 2.5 cm along each edge.
  11. Mitt: round it more. Fold the tips of the four new corners at the top behind, about 1 cm, so the top is nicely round.
  12. Put it together. Glue the thumb behind the left side, leaning out. Glue the cuff across the bottom, and the loop behind it, hanging down at the right.

Hot, hot, hot!

Draw slanting lines both ways across the mitt for quilting. Hang it up by its loop next to the oven.
