How to fold an origami party hat

A tall kite makes the cone, and the white tip tucked behind it comes round as a band along the bottom. Glue a round bobble, folded from a little square, on the point.

You need: 1 square sheet for the hat and a yellow one a third as wide for the bobble, both coloured on one side; scissors and glue. Easy, 8 steps, about 5 minutes.

Steps

  1. Hat: crease the diagonal. Start with the hat. Put the big square white side up like a diamond. Fold the left corner to the right corner, crease, and unfold.
  2. Hat: make a tall kite. Fold the two upper edges in to lie along the centre crease.
  3. Hat: tuck the white tip. Fold the white point at the bottom up behind, along the line between the side corners. It will make the party hat's white band.
  4. Hat: fold up the band. Fold the bottom edge up a little, about a twelfth of the hat's height. The back of the tucked tip comes round to the front as a white band.
  5. Hat: trim the band. A little colour peeks out at each end of the band. Snip it off with a slanted cut, from where the white starts at the bottom up to just inside the top corner.
  6. Bobble: new sheet. Set the hat aside. Take the small square, about a third as wide as the first, coloured side up.
  7. Bobble: round it off. Fold all four corners behind, each a little less than a third of the way along the edges, so the bobble is round.
  8. Glue on the bobble. Dab glue on the back of the bobble and press it onto the tip of the hat.

Party time!

Draw dots all over the hat, and fold one for every guest at the party.
