How to fold an origami sand dollar
Fold a half sheet into a slim point of five layers, as for a star, but snip the end round: it opens into a perfect disc. Draw the five-petal flower.
You need: 1 square sheet (15 cm), sandy beige on one side, scissors and a black pen. Medium, 9 steps, about 8 minutes.
Steps
- Fold in half. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. The middle of the top fold is the centre of your disc.
- Fold the left side over. Fold from the centre down to a point on the bottom edge 2.4 cm left of its middle, bringing the left part over to the right.
- Fold the right side over. Fold the right part over along the edge of the flap you just made, so it lies on top.
- Fold the point in half. Fold the left half of the point over onto the right half, lining up the edges. It is now a slim point of many layers.
- Snip it round. Measure 7.2 cm from the point along both edges and in the middle. Snip from mark to mark in two straight cuts.
- Unfold. Unfold the last fold.
- Unfold again. Unfold the right part.
- And again. Unfold the left part.
- Open it flat. Unfold the top half. A round disc!
A sand dollar!
Draw five long petals from the middle like a flower, with dots down each one, a small ring in the centre and five little slots near the edge.
