How to fold an origami santa hat
A tall red kite with its white tip tucked behind: fold up the bottom and the white comes round as the furry band. Flop the point over and glue a white bobble on the end.
You need: 1 square sheet, red on one side, and a white square a quarter as wide; scissors and glue. Medium, 9 steps, about 6 minutes.
Steps
- Hat: crease the diagonal. Start with the hat. Put the big square white side up like a diamond. Fold the left corner to the right corner, crease, and unfold.
- Hat: make a tall kite. Fold the two upper edges in to lie along the centre crease.
- Hat: tuck the white tip. Fold the white point at the bottom up behind, along the line between the side corners. It will make Santa's hat's white band.
- Hat: fold up the band. Fold the bottom edge up about a tenth of the hat's height. The back of the tucked tip comes round to the front as a furry white band.
- Hat: trim the band. A little colour peeks out at each end of the band. Snip it off with a slanted cut, from where the white starts at the bottom up to just inside the top corner.
- Hat: flop the tip over. Fold the top over to the right on a slant, from three quarters of the way down the red on the left to halfway down on the right, so the tip hangs past the side.
- Bobble: new sheet. Set the hat aside. Take the small white square, about a quarter as wide as the first.
- Bobble: round it off. Fold all four corners behind, each a little less than a third of the way along the edges, so the bobble is round.
- Glue on the bobble. Dab glue on the back of the bobble and press it onto the tip of the hat.
Ho ho ho!
Stick it on a Christmas card, or hang it on the tree with a loop of thread.
