How to fold an origami saxophone
Fold half a square into a strip that's gold inside and out and cut it into a long cone. Bend the crook, outside-reverse-fold the bow, fold up the bell, then cut it slim.
You need: Half a gold 15 cm square (7.5 x 15 cm), scissors and a black pen. Hard, 7 steps, about 25 minutes.
Steps
- Edges to the middle. White side up, long sides up and down. Fold both long edges in to meet along the middle.
- Fold in half. Fold the right half behind along the middle. The strip is gold on both sides, inside and out.
- Cut a long cone. Through all layers, cut from the outer edge 1.1 cm above the bottom up to 3 mm from the fold at the top: a long thin cone.
- Bend the crook. Fold the thin top 2 cm over to the left on a slant, so it points left and a little down. This is the crook.
- Bend the bow. Outside-reverse-fold the wide bottom to the right on a 45° line, wrapping it around the outside, so it points sideways.
- Bell up. Fold the end of the bow up on a 45° line, 1.4 cm right of the body, so the wide end points up. That's the bell.
- Slim and flare. Cut a slim strip off the body's left side and round the bow's bottom corner. Cut the bell's outer edge so it widens toward the top.
Ready to jazz!
Draw a black mouthpiece on the crook, round keys down the body and the bell, a key rod along the body and a dark opening in the bell.
How to play
- Hold the mouthpiece to your lips, wiggle your fingers on the keys and hum a jazzy tune.
- Make a whole band with the banjo, harp and accordion.
- Glue it to a card for a friend who loves jazz.
