How to fold an origami scarecrow

Fold two brown strips into crossed sticks, a blue shirt, a sack-cloth head and a wide straw hat, then glue on a red patch. Draw a stitched smile so the birds still feel welcome.

You need: 1 blue rectangle, 1 beige square, 1 straw-yellow rectangle, 2 brown strips, a tiny red square, a glue stick and a black pen. Medium, 11 steps, about 14 minutes.

Steps

  1. Shirt: shape it. Take the blue rectangle, blue side up. Fold the bottom corners behind on long slants for the waist, and the top corners a little behind for shoulders.
  2. Patch. Set the shirt aside. Take the tiny red square for a patch.
  3. Head: new square. Set the patch aside. Take the beige square, coloured side up.
  4. Head: round it. Fold all four corners a little behind, so the head is round like a stuffed sack.
  5. Hat: new sheet. Set the head aside. Take the straw-yellow rectangle, coloured side up, lying long ways.
  6. Hat: crown and brim. Fold the top corners behind on steep slants, ending a little above the bottom edge. The narrow top is the crown, the wide bottom the brim.
  7. Arm stick: new strip. Set the hat aside. Take a brown strip, white side up, lying long ways.
  8. Arm stick: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way, top edge down to the bottom edge.
  9. Pole: new strip. Set the arm stick aside. Take the other brown strip, white side up, standing tall.
  10. Pole: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way, left edge over to the right edge.
  11. Glue it together. Glue the arm stick across the pole near the top. Glue the shirt over the cross, the patch on the shirt, the head above and the hat on top.

Shoo, crows!

Draw button eyes, a little nose and a stitched smile. Add stitches round the patch, buttons down the shirt and a hat band.
