How to fold an origami tractor
Fold a square in half and cut out a step so a tall cab rises behind a low hood. Fold two black wheels of different sizes and a smoke pipe, glue them on and draw the window and grille.
You need: A 15 cm square in green or red, 9 cm and 5 cm black squares, a 1.5 × 6 cm black strip, scissors, a glue stick and a white pen. Medium, 14 steps, about 15 minutes.
Steps
- Body: fold in half. Body first. Put the 15 cm square white side up and fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. The fold on top is the roof.
- Body: mark the cab. Fold the right end over to the left on a line about 5.5 cm from the left edge, so it sticks out past it.
- Body: open it again. Fold the end back out. The crease marks the front of the cab.
- Body: cut the step. Snip down the crease from the roof about 3 cm. From there, cut straight along to the right end and throw the piece away. The low part is the hood.
- Body: round the nose. Fold the hood's top front corner behind, both layers together, a little more than 1 cm each way.
- Back wheel: new sheet. Set the body aside. Take a 9 cm black square, white side up.
- Back wheel: corners in. Fold all four corners in to meet in the middle.
- Back wheel: round it. Fold the four points behind, about 1.3 cm each, so the wheel looks round.
- Front wheel: new sheet. Set the back wheel aside. Take a 5 cm black square, white side up.
- Front wheel: corners in. Fold all four corners in to the middle, like the back wheel.
- Front wheel: round it. Fold the four points behind, about 7 mm each, to round it.
- Exhaust: new sheet. Set the front wheel aside. Take the 1.5 × 6 cm black strip, white side up, standing tall.
- Exhaust: fold in half. Fold it in half along its length, left edge over onto the right edge, and glue it flat.
- Put it together. Glue the exhaust behind the hood, just in front of the cab. Glue the big wheel under the cab and the small one under the hood, half sticking out below.
Off to the fields!
Draw a big cab window, a grille and headlight on the nose, and white hubs on the wheels. Then plough a row across the table!
