How to fold an origami ambulance

Fold red paper white side up into a van with a red stripe and a sloping cab. Glue on two red strips as a cross, a blue light bar and two black wheels.

You need: Half a 15 cm red square, two 1 × 3 cm red strips, a 1 × 3 cm blue strip, two 4 cm black squares, a glue stick and a black pen. Medium, 18 steps, about 20 minutes.

Steps

  1. Body: red stripe. Start with the red half square, white side up, long edge at the bottom. Fold the bottom quarter up in front. It shows red.
  2. Body: slope the cab. Fold the top-right corner behind on a slant, so the front of the cab slopes down to the bonnet.
  3. Body: round the corners. Fold the top-left corner and both bottom corners behind, just a little, to round them.
  4. Cross: first strip. Set the body aside. Take a red strip, red side up, standing up tall.
  5. Cross: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way, right half behind, and crease it flat.
  6. Cross: second strip. Set it aside. Take the other red strip, red side up, lying across.
  7. Cross: fold in half. Fold it in half the long way too, bottom half behind.
  8. Light bar: new sheet. Set the strip aside. Take the blue strip for the light bar, blue side up.
  9. Light bar: round the top. Fold the two top corners a little way behind, so the light bar has a round top.
  10. Wheel 1: new sheet. Set the light bar aside. Take a small black square, white side up.
  11. Wheel 1: corners in. Fold all four corners in to meet in the middle.
  12. Wheel 1: hubcap. Fold each point back out a little, so a small white square shows in the middle. That's the hubcap.
  13. Wheel 1: round it. Fold the four points of the square a little way behind, so the wheel looks round.
  14. Wheel 2: new sheet. Set the first wheel aside and take the other black square, white side up.
  15. Wheel 2: corners in. Fold all four corners in to the middle.
  16. Wheel 2: hubcap. Fold each point back out a little for the hubcap.
  17. Wheel 2: round it. Fold the four points behind to round it off.
  18. Put the ambulance together. Glue the wheels on, half showing below. Glue the two red strips across each other on the white side, and the light bar behind the roof.

Draw a dark window in the cab, the doors, a small back window and a white headlight. Nee-naw, nee-naw!
