How to fold an origami astronaut
Round a pale grey square into a helmet with a dark navy visor, fold a grey backpack and a strip of arms, then cut a folded square into a suit with two legs and glue it all together.
You need: Pale grey squares of 8 cm, 9 cm and 18 cm, a 10 cm darker grey square, a 6 cm navy square, scissors and a glue stick. Medium, 15 steps, about 22 minutes.
Steps
- Helmet: round it. Start with the 8 cm pale grey square, grey side up. Fold all four corners a little way behind to make a round helmet.
- Visor: new sheet. Set the helmet aside. Take the navy square, navy side up.
- Visor: top and bottom behind. Fold the top and bottom edges a little way behind so the visor is wider than it is tall.
- Visor: round the corners. Fold the four corners behind to round them off.
- Backpack: new sheet. Set the visor aside. Take the darker grey square, grey side up.
- Backpack: top and bottom behind. Fold the top and bottom edges a little way behind to make a wide box.
- Arms: new sheet. Set the backpack aside. Take the 18 cm pale grey square, white side up.
- Arms: edges to the middle. Fold the top and bottom edges to meet on the middle line.
- Arms: and again. Fold the new top and bottom edges to the middle line again.
- Arms: round the hands. Fold all four corners of the strip a little way behind to round the gloves.
- Suit: new sheet. Set the arms aside. Take the 9 cm pale grey square, grey side up.
- Suit: fold in half. Fold the left edge over onto the right edge.
- Suit: cut the shape. Cut through both layers: snip off the top right corner for a shoulder, then cut a slanted gap up from the bottom of the fold to make the legs.
- Suit: open it. Unfold the suit. It has round shoulders and two chunky legs.
- Put it together. Glue the helmet on top of the suit's shoulders and the visor on the helmet. Glue the arms behind the shoulders and the backpack behind them.
One small step!
Draw a flag patch and a control box on the chest, a belt and a white shine on the visor.
