How to fold an origami little balalaika
Fold a sheet in thirds into a long neck, then swing each flap's bottom corner out to make the balalaika's triangle body.
You need: 1 rectangle of paper (about 10 x 22 cm), red or brown on one side. Easy, 7 steps, about 5 minutes.
Steps
- Left third. Start white side up, the paper standing tall. Fold the left side over so its edge lies a third of the way from the right.
- Left wing. Fold the bottom of the flap back out on a steep slant from its bottom left corner, so a point sticks out to the left.
- Right third. Fold the right side over on top, along the edge of the first flap.
- Right wing. Fold the bottom of this flap back out the same way, so a point sticks out to the right.
- Turn over. Turn the balalaika over, so it is all one colour.
- Head. Fold the top corners of the neck behind on small slants to shape the head.
- Flat bottom. Fold the bottom behind along a straight line across, level with the two points, so the body has a flat bottom.
Play a tune!
Draw a round sound hole, lines across the neck for frets and three strings. Strum it fast!
